Episode 32- Empowering? Or Disempowering?

I can’t stop thinking about this episode. Early in, there was one section that really hit home for me about how other people won’t change just by us coming along side them. As long as what they are doing is working, they won’t change. I think that’s one of the greatest heartbreaks of divorce. That sometimes your spouse will only get better if you leave and then if they do get better, someone else will get to enjoy being with that version of them.

On the other hand, there was another part that really bothered me and that I can’t stop thinking about. The guest said her mantra during the most painful part was
“Screw you. Watch this.”
I got a little chuckle out of that at first impression. I’m all about an empowering call to action. But the more I thought about it, everything in me was pushing against that.

Here’s why. “Screw you, watch this” necessitates an audience. It centers someone other than you and relies on their observance or reaction. I think it completely gives away your power because it is other dependent. I understand how it may have been motivating to the woman who said it, but as she is the expert guest, I think it’s ultimately a damaging message to suggest universal application for others going through something similar.

I am convinced my healing will come from introspection, self awareness, self care, positive small steps in my own best interest, and maintaining healthy boundaries. Not from considering what he thinks about what I am doing now.
